MID: Civil War novel for gifted

I hope someone can help.  I'm looking for a Civil War novel that could
be used by the 7th grade gifted English classes.  The teacher could use
Red Badge of Courage but asked me if there were others that could be
used.  I searched the archives and found several lists and found a few
but I'm unfamiliar with them.

Michael Shaar's The Killer Angels and then his son's Gods and Generals
and The Last Full Measure sound promising but they were all so long.
Would they be appropriate?

The ann Rinaldi books In My Father's House and The Last Silk Dress had
very good reviews but they sounded like they had quite a lot of romance
also so I'm not sure. Is anyond familiar with them?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
