HIT: Accelerated Reader for pre-readers

Hello, Group.
        Wow! As always, everybody came through with some great suggestions for
utilizing AR with kindergarten and early first grade students.
        Several people suggested using a "buddy system"; pairing the little
ones with an older child, in our case fifth and sixth graders.  I have
already discussed this with some of our faculty at that level, and they
love the idea.  Both books that the buddy shares with the young student
and those read in storytime could be done.  One school called these
students the SWAT Team, for Students With Aptitude for Teaching.  They
would have to be coached in the difference between helping and
cheating.  Another colleague warned that I need to make sure I have
plento of 1.0-2.0 books with tests.
        Another librarian suggested using parent volunteers to work with small
groups; this is a good collaborative activity.  The volunteer would
read the question, and let a group of four or so discuss the answers
and enter the group answer.
        Another reads a story to an entire class, then gathers the students
around the computer, where the librarian reads the questions and the
entire class discusses the answers.
        I think we will go with the SWAT team idea (love that acronym!), and I
am charged up for the coming school year.
