Hi, Folks. Thanks for all of the responses to how to handle study hall students. In order to conserve space, I have left the authors names off the information. Lori K Joffe Librarian Bensalem High School Bensalem, Pennsylvania lkjof@icdc.com Yes,Lori, we do not have study hall in the library. If study hall students need to use the library, they need a note from the teacher who has given the assignment. For a few years everytime the proctor was absent the office sent the students to the library. I resisted and came up with a plan that I was able to implement. There was no room. Truth is I had a couple of teachers who love to bring their classes to the library for a "survey of periodicals" and whenever I needed them I could always find two classes to occupy the library. Mean, I know. But it worked. The office no longer even tries to send the study hall to the library. And the teachers still love to bring their classes to the library. We now average ten classes a day using the library for some constructive purpose. I love the crowds. please let me know if you find any good suggestions on this one--i sometimes get up to 70 students at a time in for study hall. One LMS I know in a high school does not allow students to come to the library during study hall unless they come in before the school day and sign up to do so. They also have to list what subject/class theyare coming to the library to work on. This helps to eliminate those who are coming to just hang out. These students know that they will not get away with loitering in this library. Coming to the libraryduring study hall requires some forethought. Students know that if they are not there to do work, theywill be sent back to study hall. I have a schedule, first come first served for teachers. They sign up for the library AND me for that period. No study hall if I'm reserved. Since we're near the office, the SH aide checks each morning to see what periods we're open. If I have a last minute request, or a spontaneous classroom in, I send a note down to keep them in study hall. When you zone your library and have teachers sign up to bring whole classes, and if the classrooms really use the library, then there is no room for study hall kids. We asked teachers signing up to use specified areas; e.g., social studies sat in the 900s area, science in the 500 and 600s area, English in the 800s/fic area. Since this was next to the 700s and we had only the three large seating areas, the Art classes also used the 800s area. We always had a run of carrels that could be used by individuals with passes any period. Individuals checked themselves in and out during the period with a time clock. They had three minutes to return to wherever...study hall or classroom. We do not have a study hall. This year we will service 2800 students, so our traffic will be high. I don't know the details of your campus, but check into your state and district guidelines or policy/procedure manual. If none, prepare one, and present it to the board and get it passed so you have something to stand on. If you have a high population like we do, stress the importance of flexible scheduling and making the library available for research, etc to students on an as needs basis. If your campus is short on classrooms, then suggest they use a classroom where the teacher has a conference period. Hope that helps a little. Good luck. We limit the number of students from any study hall to 4. Our periods are 45 minutes long. If the study hall teacher has more than 4 kids with research passes, they can limit the students to 20 minutes each. We usually have 2-5 study halls a period, except for 8th period when we can have up to 13. In that case we limit the students to two per study hall. Students must sign in to the library when they come, stating name, study hall room #, and purpose for using the library. end part one =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
