I am curious to know when most school libraries open at the start of a new year and when they close at the end of the year. I can't imagine many are open from day one of school; there is just too much to do. I am a new ms and must spend the first 3.5 days of school (with the students) handling and distributing textbooks (which I view solely as a duty of mine but not part of my duties as the media specialist). I am coming into a library that needs some reorganization of everything including the collection. Most of the collection needs to be physically reclassified (not in the OPAC thankfully) and sorted through. I would prefer to have the library closed for the first 2 weeks of school (in addition to the 3.5 days for textbook distribution). This is only 4 days more than the outgoing ms had. I just want to be sure this isn't unreasonable to my staff. Those whom I am spoken with are pretty understanding about the need for change but I don't know how it will play to the entire staff and administration. Thanks, H.
