Dear All,

I got the following information from our local police dept. Crime
Prevention unit and to the best of my knowledge it is legitimate. Here
goes:

We have received information detailing two e-mail credit card scams
involving AOL and AT&T WorldNet Services users going around that you
should be aware of. Some members of the AT&T WorldNet Service are
receiving an e-mail message that says "Urgent Message regarding your
AT&T Net account". These fraudulent e-mails state that due to billing
errors, AT&T worldNet service members are required to submit their
credit card information or risk losing their Internet access. AT&T
WorldNet service did not send or authorize the e-mail. AT&T WorldNet
services will never request its members to provide credit card or
password information through e-mail. If you receive any e-mail
requesting your credit card information or any other personal financial
information (including password) please forward it to "abuse@att.net"
with "credit card fraud" in the subject line.

The second e-mail scam involved an alleged AOL Web Rep. The e-mail
supposedly came from an "AOL Web REP" named Jake Simmons who directed
the reader in the e-mail to a website address that closely resembled
AOL's URL address. The e-mail read that "You must immediately correct
the information at this site or else AOL reserves the right to take this
to a court of law and sue for credit card fraud". At this fraudulent
website individuals were asked to submit personal information, including
credit card information. This fraudulent URL site has since been shut
down; however it is an early warning that scams such as these will
probably reappear and to be alert for them.

It goes on to suggest that if any local residents receive e-mails such
as these, they contact the local Crime Prevention unit at the P.D. right
away.--
