Our system (Follett for windows) allows for "temporary" entries, so we put
any magazine that someone wants to check out in one of those heavy plastic
binders (with a heavy wire down the center to "lock" it in.  Each of those
has a barcode, which we enter with the title and date of issue as it goes
out.  When it is returned, the system tells us it's a temporary entry and
we can delete it and re-use the cover for any other magazine going out.
Seems to work pretty well.
