Although some para professionals do learn a lot and run their program well,
they never really get the same training and don't have the same breath of
knowledge. Also, some never do learn and I cringe to think of what is going
on in some libraries ( most likely not the libraries of poeple reading this
list!).

This thread was posted when I was already thinking about this situation. We
just had our one MLS cert. librarian(who retired) replaced by a person that
I 'hear' doesn't even have a Bachelors degree for a pay of $8.00 an hour. I
am so baffeled by this. It must be for money because I know of a teacher in
our district that wanted the job. It also makes me wonder why I work so
hard to upgrade our district!?!? (I just got a $93,000 grant to automate
the district and anyone knows what a job that is. I also keep sending
information to admin. and staff on a constant basis. I participate
incommittees and offered to be on the interviewing team.) I feel like
nothing I have worked for has been understood or matters. It seems as
though there is no understanding of what we are losing for the sake of a few
dollars. I am very disheartened. And if this is the mentality, what does
that mean for my employment, here or elsewhere. I was thinking about
looking for a job in my home state, but what if I end up getting into a
worse situation.

I guess the question 'hits too close to home'.
