Since I see that this discussion is still ongoing I want to add my two cents. I call my checkout policy a "guideline". There is no set limit of how many books a student is allowed to check out. The students have been generous enough to tell me what they need and I encourage them to bring them back if they are doing research. For recreational reading they take what they can handle and bring them back.
