 LM-Netters,

My recent inquiry about forcing poinsettias to turn red, elicited over a do=
zen responses and two requests for a hit.

Those that provided advise seem to agree the the processing of forcing the =
change by Christmas must begin as early as September or October. The plant =
must be brought into the house by September and placed in a completely dark=
, cool area for 8 to 12 hours a day. Water sparingly, although someone sugg=
ested using Epson salt in the water. Do not allow the plant to stand in any=
 water.

By Christmas the leaves should be turning red, and the plant can be brought=
into the library. There will be no blooms on the plant only red foliage.

Over fertilization, watering and drafts after the holidays will cause the p=
lant to drop its leaves.

I would particularly like to thank Carolyn Roys in Geneseo Illinois, for pr=
oviding a lengthy and meticulous description of poinsettia care. She also s=
upplied a URL address for the Oregon State University Extension Service sit=
e, which gives many more details concerning year-round care, then I can in=
clude in this message.=20
