Thank you ( and my daughter the future librarian thanks you) for all of the suggestions for non fiction books about libraries. I was asked to post the list. Some people might like to read some of these over the winter break. The Story of Libraries from the Invention of Writing to the Computer Age by Fred Lerner (1998). _The Book on the Bookshelf_, by Henry Petroski. It's a history of how books have been bound and stored. Sounds kind of boring, but is actually quite interesting. It made me wonder if all our computers now tethered to desks with network cables will cometo be seen by future historians as the 20th century version of the books chained to desks of the Middle Ages. _A Gentle Madness_, a book about book collecting; libraries are major collectors. "Information Problem-Solving" by Michael Eisenberg & Robert Berkowitz Archibald MacLeish's "Champion of the Cause." It is a compliation of his speeches. He was chosen to be the Director of the Library of Congress in 1939. "The Indispensable Librarian" by Doug Johnson. Reading Rooms, edited by Susan Allen Toth. It's a collection of essays by famous authors about libraries. The invisible librarian by Gary Hartzell ________________________________ Just did a quick search on amazon.com I'm guessing she can't use a library textbook. Don't know a thing about any of these, but the first one sounded especially interesting, if expensive! The Amazing Internet Challenge : How Leading Projects Use Library Skills to Organize the Web by Amy Tracy Wells, Susan Calcari, Travis Koplow Published 1999 $45.00 Andrew Carnegie : Builder of Libraries (Community Builders) Charnan Simon / Paperback / Published 1998 $5.56 Banned in the U.S.A. by Herbert N. Foerstel $49.95 Future Libraries : Dreams, Madness, & Reality; Walt Crawford, Michael Gorman Being Analog : Creating Tomorrow's Libraries by Walt Crawford $28.00 ____________________________________- How reading changed my life by Anna Quindlan Although I had requested non fiction a few people also suggested some fiction books FICTION The Archivist by Martha Cooley The name of the rose by Umberto Ecco There were a few more fiction titles which I must have iadvertantly deleted. -- Michele Missner Program Leader, Library Media Services Appleton Area School District Office: Einstein Middle School Phone: 920 832-4899 email: missnerm@athenet.net missnermichele@aasd.k12.wi.us Library Media Specialist Appleton West High School 610 N.
