I knew that I missed a few in my previous post. Here they are:

My suggestion for every librarian's "must read" list is Gary Hartzell's
"Building Influence for the School Librarian." It is published by
Linworth
(1994) in their Professional Growth Series.

The Library in America.
It's chock full of pictures of Carnegie libraries, the huge card catalog
at New York Public,
interesting info like Emily Hanaway being the first person in the US to
establish a library in a school, that kind of thing. Got some great
photos
of Melvil Dewey and his library school students.

_Where the Heart Is_ (fiction)by
Billie Letts. It's hilarious but sweet and touching. The heroine,
Novalee
Nation, is abandoned at an Oklahoma Wal-Mart by her boyfriend. She
lives
there for more than two months until her baby is born during the middle
of
the night. She is befriended by a male librarian and lots of the story
involves him, research she does there, and the importance of reading in
her
life. It is great!! It's available in paperback (I bought it at Sam's
for
about $8) and was an Oprah book.

Another book, maybe not considered adult?, would be _Summer of the
Monkeys_
by wilson Rawls. A library and research done there plays an important
role
in the book. Our 6th grade reads it, but it's on the same reading level
as
_Where the Red Fern Grows_, so you might be able to consider it on an
adult
