I have also had this problem with my first and second grade teachers.  I =
finally came up with this solution and the teachers seem to be able to =
work with it.

I keep all books in their proper section.  I use red cloth tape cut into =
=BD inch by 1 inch pieces.  These are placed on the spines of the easy =
readers, primers,  etc in the EASY FICTION section.  I also used the red =
tape for the easy non-fiction books shelved by the DEWEY system.  The =
students can find the books themselves or sometimes I or my assistant will =
pull a few to put on a cart.  The  students must chose one red tape book =
and the other book(s)  are free choice.
