Subject: Elem/Prim: Successful Summer Library Programs?

Anyone have any successful ideas for having the library open in the summer for
students in the community? Last year I found out the last week of school we
were going to do this. Got a hasty note out the last day of school. I was
paid for three days/week for two months. Had one student come in the first
month (also had a note published weekly in the local newspaper announcing the
library was open as well as on the school sign). Next month did have about 5
different students. One came almost everyday. If funding is provided again
this year would probably limit to 2 days/week, but would like to try some
other "get them in" ideas if anyone has done anything like this. This past
year I let two students who had been at our school but had moved on to middle
school check out some books. Had a hard time getting them back and had to
contact the middle school to get them back after school started. Will
probably limit to students who will be in our school the following year. We
are a pre-school through 3rd grade this year. Our local public library offers
an extremely successful summer reading program with lots of activities and
prizes. I know of a couple of schools in our area who have tried to link the
two, but it was extremely hard to do so. We are in a low economic area and
some of our kids may just not have a way to get to the public library so those
would probably be our focus.

Thanks in advance. If there is an interest I'll post a hit.
