MID: quality depressing novels

Well, isn't life funny...I actually need some ideas for  books with a plot
dealing with death, mental illness, eating disorders, broken homes, but they
must be suitable for 6th graders, and be quality fiction.  I have quite a few
students who enjoy reading this type of book for a variety of reasons.  I do
agree that while it's not necessarily the best for a class read-aloud, there
is a viable audience for these "depressing" novels.

I'll be glad to post the results.
