TECH: Automation-barcoding for a union catalog

In our district all the elementaries automated separately with no thought to
a union catalog, so each school has the same barcode numbers as the other
schools.  We are now thinking union catalog and they don't want to
rebarcode.  Is there any way to merge their collections without rebarcoding.
One of them talked to the Follett rep who said rebarcoding wouldn't be
necessary, but I don't understand how that would work.  Has anyone been
through this?
