Last year I bit the bullet for weeding the FICtion section. I had my circulation
program print out a list of all my FICtion books that have not circulated since
we went on line in 1993. I had my library aids use the list to gather the books
on book carts.

This fall I put a sign out, informing the student body, that the collection
would be discarded if they were not read this year. Each day a featured one
book on each cart hoping that it would be circulated and evaluated by the
reader. After all the books were featured, I realized that these books were not
being read for a reason. No one was interested in them! So I've started to
pull the shelf lists in anticipation of discarding them in June. They are still
on display, but seldom does anyone touch them.

Someone once told me that our school library was not an "archival" library.
That rational made it easier for me to weed those books that once of value and
appeal, but no longer do.

At least I have space for new titles that have been purchased.
