Thanks for everyone's help. I posted the question and THEN I checked the
archives. I'll reverse order next time. I'm learning!

Subject: HIT: and thanks on circulating encyclopedias

Wow!! Thanks to everyone who sent me their input on circulating
encyclopedias -- close to fifty people answered, more responses I've ever
gotten for any query I've posted.

For those of you who requested to know what people said, here it is:

1. With the exception of two people, everyone said they circulate old
encyclopedias.
2. About 90% circulate them overnight; a few for one week, and a few have
the regular circ. period (2 or 3 weeks) for the encyclopedias.
3. About 5-6 said they circulate all their reference material overnight.
Creates good feelings about the library; parents, students, teachers like
this.
4. People don't seem to have problems getting the books back. Some people
charge a larger fine than they normally would, for example, 10 cents
instead of 2; $1.00 a day; 5 cents an hr., 35 cents per day.
5. One person charges 50 cents to borrow reference bks. overnight.
6. People feel that allowing the encyclopedias to go out has decreased
theft and torn out pages.

Thanks again for all the responses.
