With a new year approaching, I would like to know of the ways that different librarians come up with their schedule for the new year. I operate on a partly fixed, partly flexible schedule in which the K-5 students are scheduled two days out of the week and the rest of the week is flexible, giving the middle school a chance to use the library. This year the principal organized a library task force who is helping me to come up with a schedule that is workable and serves all of the students. He has some great ideas that I go along with. However, I am finding that the scheduling committee has come up with a library schedule with no input from me. The same thing is happening with music, art, P.E., etc. We are supposed to have a library task force meeting in a week or two to discuss the role of the library and how it is to best serve the students, and I hope the principal will listen to our input. I would like to know how many schools have schedules handed to the librarian by the principal, how many schedules are a result of cooperative planning between administration, librarian, and teachers, and how many schools have schedules that are set up by a scheduling committee and just handed to teachers, librarians, music, art, P.E., etc. with no regards to how it can best serve the students. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Madeline L.
