**THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO AUGUST 3, 1999**

The following is updated information about the TEENS IN THE 21ST
CENTURY: ACCESS FOR THE FUTURE program at the AASL Ninth National
Conference in Birmingham, Alabama.  Make special note of the extended
application deadline.

TEENS IN THE 21ST CENTURY: ACCESS FOR THE FUTURE

Part I: Wednesday, November 10 - 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Part II: Thursday, November 11, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Through the generosity of the Margaret A. Edwards Trust, the fee for
this special workshop is $45.00

Presenters:
Ann K. Symons, 1998-1999 President, American Library Association
Andrew Case, Steven Case and Stevana Case, plaintiffs in Case et al.
v. Unified School District 233
Chris Crutcher, author of Ironman, Running Loose, Stotan! and other
YA and adult novels
Nancy Garden, author of Annie on My Mind, the book challenged in Case
et al. v. Unified School District 233
Carrie Gardner, ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee
Bennett Haselton, founder of Peacefire and teenage activist
Joe Janes, University of Washington and founder of the Internet
Public Library
Judith Krug, Director, ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom
A panel of teenagers from Birmingham High Schools

Fifty applicants will be selected to participate in a leadership
development institute designed to educate librarians and young adults
about intellectual freedom issues and equip them to deal with
challenges to both print and electronic formats.  Sessions will
investigate real life threats to the freedom to read and learn in
libraries; explore the philosophy of intellectual freedom; encourage
interaction between practicing young adult librarians and teens on a
variety of intellectual freedom topics; and focus on teaching teens
and librarians how to advocate for open access to both print and
electronic resources.
