Thanks to everyone who responded. Here is what I have so far:

There is a great combination CD and tape player/recorder that we started
buying that sounds great and is very durable. ...I think it is an EIKI model
3070, for about $250 (NYS bid price) We had been buying SONY boom boxes but
either they were stolen or the CD gave out! The EIKI's look just like the
tape recorders we buy, kind of square and nondescript. Kids aren't likely to
steal them.

I recently bought an EIKI commercial-grade CD/Cassette player. It is
wonderful
and I think worth the price. Although it costs more (around $250-300), the
teachers love it. It performs better. will last longer. We had the same
trouble
you report. Call a local AV dealer.....maybe in or near your city. They
sometimes offer
better prices. That's what I did.

Ask at a local Wal-Mart or Target which radios have NOT been returned.
Check w
some kids to see what they are using and how long theirs have lasted, but
don't
spend $325.

I have gotten some from Radio Shack that are going on their third year
without failure for about 169.00. Like tape recorders/players of the past I
used to try and buy the heavy duty...but found limited success. If they are
used a lot they aren't going to hang in too long...or that has been my
experience. I just buy the medium priced and know that I will have to
replace. Tragic but true.
