GEN:getting a copyright

Dear Group,
I have a group of teachers working on unit materials that they want to use at
an upcoming workshop.  These teachers want to be certain their efforts are
copyrighted.  I am aware that written works are copyrighted even without any
application process, but....is there still an application process in use.  My
teachers want to do everything by the book.  Thanks for your help.
