I'm sure that $30,000-$40,000 is the cost to automate a library; however we did not spend that much--this is how: Mandarin (from SIRS) $3,500.00 Training 1,050.00 Supplies 300.00 Two computers(upgrade) 1,000.00 Built a server w/tape backup 2,000.00 Two new computers--OPAC 2,000.00 Bar code reader 450.00 In-house conversion 1,200.00 Annual service fee 625.00(use to be 525.00) That's a total of $12,125.00. Students and our systems operator made the server and upgraded the two computers I had already. I've been doing the retro-conversion using Marcive. I estimate for the 5000-6000 volumes we have $15,000.00 is not a bad deal. It's been a lot of work doing the retro-conversion in house, but our shelf-list was so bad it would have taken a long time to clean them up to be sent out and even then subject headings, local notes, and annotations would have to be checked. This way I am seeing each title, some of them for the first time and recataloging according to our curriculum.
