Here are a few that I left out.
Had a discussion about things that put you in a bad mood and make you matd.
Read Mean Soup by Betsy Everitt. Brainstorm things that they might put in
their oun recipe for mean soup. Give out dictionaries and a self made
worksheet with lines for about 7 ingredients and space for them to draw
their meanest self portrait.

Divide into 4 or 5 teams and give them a set of guide words and have them
list as many words as they can in five minutes. Then rotate the guide
words to another team. Each team gets five mnutes with each list. Give
treat for team that lists the most words for each set of guide words, the
most overall, the most unique word, etc.

Form two teams. One member from each team will be given a word and they
race to the dictionary. . They bring me the dictionary, and show me their
word. They get to run tthe dictionary back. Tell them this is a
controlled race, like Nascar on pit road, if they go too fast they get
penalized.

Firts, I bought some sandwich bags and made templates of sandwich parts:
bread, lettuce, cheese, mayo, onion, tomato, bologna, mustard, etc...Then I
cut some paper into pieces so they could use the templates to cut out the
sandwich parts. Showed several different dictionaries to students. Looked
at guide words and compared them to bread. I had some bread cut out and
laminated and wrote the guide word on the bread with dry erase marker.
This helped the kids get the idea that the guide words were the first and
last things on the page just like bread is the first and last thing of a
sandwich. When were were done, the kids used the dictionaries in their
spelling books to create their own sandwiches. When their sandwiches are
corrected by myself or their teacher, they put their sandwiches in a
sandwich bag to take home.
