Target: Book Title Needed

One of our teachers came in looking for information about a book she heard
about on the NPR.  Terry Gross was interviewing an author with the first name
of  "Andre" and the title of the book started with "Sand and ....".  It is
about two people from different cultures living together in the same house.
One of the people is a drug addict.  Thank you for your help in advance.
