I attempted to send this as a HIT before, but I don't think it "went out" so
here we go again! Thanks to all of you who sent sites and ideas to me.

I have second graders using the web to research mammals right now. I created a
page on our web site for them with links that they can use. A great way to get a
bunch of links fast is to link a Yahooligans index. You can see some examples on
those pages. Honestly, however, with younger kids like that you don't need a
hundred sites covering a multitude of creatures etc. Five or six really nice
sites that have pictures etc. are good enough. I would spend an hour or two
online and preselect those five or six, then create a page of links. You can see
my page for second graders at http://www.bccs.org/mc/; click on the resources
button on the left and then choose the second grade mammals project. (Can't
remember the exact address off the top of my head, but it's very easy to find.

I finally figured out that the little ones only need 2 or 3 web sites.
My third grade teachers really liked these sites. The above url is a
link off our web page.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Try Yahooligans http://www.yahooligans.com/
and KidsClick http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/KidsClick%21/ . KidsClick has an
advanced search page that you can put in grade levels required. Both kidsearch
engines will give you animal sites -- and evaluated ones.
I have some animal related sites on our science links at:
I know you will get lots - so I'll just send one of my favorites:
http://www.birminghamzoo.com/    Birmingham Zoo
Go to Search the Zoo - there's a search engine which is very helpful
and great links besides the zoo's own data base of information and pictures.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Try the Philly zoo site. Or use Yahoos and go under zoos.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Take a look at Dinosaurs Alive <http://www.onlineclass.com/Dinosaurs/home.htm>.
It was designed for K-6 and is simple because the research process is outlined
in this collaborative research project and there are moderators to help with the
process.
This is a fun one.  Students can choose and animal and read what the
sound that animal makes is called in different languages.
This one is also fun - its from the PBS show Kratts Creatures and
if they go to "Creature World" they can look up animals by continent:
This site is from Sea World/Bush Gardens:
I've used the Ranger Rick site and like it a lot.
