“M y Heart is on the Ground - the Diary of Nannie Little Rose, a Sioux Girl”, Carlisle Indian School, Pennsylvania, 1880 was fairly well recieved by major reviewing sources. However, made it a point to check the response and reveiws from Native American Sources. An excellent book, just revised in 1998 is “Through Indian Eyes” Beverly Slapin and Doris Seale. ALA Native American Section also provides reviews of selected material. Author Michael Dorris noted: “I isn’t for Indian: it is often for Ignorance... the rich histories, cultrues and complexities of the indigenous peoples are obscured, misrepresented and rendered trivial. Native Americans appear not a human beings, but whooping, silly, one-dimensional cartoons.” Isin't it is time to dispel these misconceptions that demean and sterotype Native peoples. There is a wealth of books and media, both fiction and non-fiction that show respect for the People. There are books that are accurate, exciting, and life-affirming, take the time, seek them out and use them.
