I'm working on my Masters degree in Library Science at Simmons College, and am asking for your help and time. I am doing a project for my reference class dealing with cooperation between media specialists and teachers in terms of assignments. The scenario that I am asking you to comment on goes something like this... a high school media specialist receives a note from a teacher making him/her aware of an upcoming assignment and that the students have been instructed NOT to ask the library staff for any assistance, as the teacher would view that as cheating. Yet the librarian feels that, even though the students posses general library skills to handle the assignment, they will be somewhat overwhelmed in trying to tackle it own their own, and with a little direction they would be much more successful. So, do you 1. Honor the teacher's request, and let the students struggle through on their own. 2. Ignore her request, and assist students on a one on one basis. 3. Contact the teacher, point out why you think the students would have trouble with the assignment and request that she bring the class to the library for an instructional session. 4. Other - please explain. Thanks very much for your comments in advance. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. All responses should be sent to me, not the list, at a.boutaugh@gte.net Please note that I have received permission to post this message.
