Dear Colleagues, Our school has a building annex about a block away and they come to the main building where my library is housed for library research and book circulation, etc. That is, they come when the teacher bothers to sign up to bring them . Since I went to flexible scheduling this year, only one teacher from the Annex has been bringing his class regularly. The others have not even come once. I've been rather upset. I met yesterday with the principal and building committee for some ideas on improving my library situation (only about a third of the main building has come for a library visit; only the 5th grades are scheduled bi-weekly) Well the principal suggested he pay for a book truck that I could wheel to the other building like a bookmobile and visit classes, perhaps one morning or one day per week , encouraging teachers to sign up for my services of going to their rooms to give booktalks or lessons or do storytelling. The others said maybe I could suggest an exchange - if I come to a classroom for a special presentation, they must then come over to the library for a session in return. Well, I'm willing to give it a try. I'd like to know if any of you have a similar situation, and, if so, what are you doing to handle it? Also, what do you suggest as a good heavy duty book truck full of books to take back and forth - down the hall, out the door and down a ramp, across an asphalt schoolyard parking lot, down a sidewalk and up another ramp to the other building, down their halls and at times, into an elevator, and back. Probably I should have a plastic tarp for rainy day cover. Is it better to use a truck with browser bins rather tan open sides, even slanted ones? Help! TIA.
