Memorization of Dewey classes is a worthless endeavor, but I do believe in teaching the classification process; the exercize one of our colleagues mentioned; giving unprocessed books to students and having them assign numbers (with a printed copy Dewey in front of them) is an outstanding way of teaching higher-order thinking skills. But memorizing numbers reminds me of my college course in library administration; we were required to memorize the goals and objectives of all the major library professional organizations. I managed to memorize most of them (enough to get a B, cite them, I oculdn't have done it to save my soul. It is enough to explain the concept, and make sure students understand how to use the catalog. Anyway, they will remember the numbers for sports and drawing books, if nothing else. ===== "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read."
