Here are comments I've received: The 3-M system was in place when I arrived here six years ago. I know little about it but discovered as I went along. When one day a bill arrived for a maintenance agreement, I rejected it as it was very expensive. I have never regretted the decision. There have never been any problems with it other than the silly ropes coming unstuck from the walls when kids lean on them Good luck! --- We have 3M and haven't had a service contract for years. In general it holds up very well (what's to break???) We have had to change the light bulb (which they walked us through over the phone) and I think a battery. Not sure if Y2K will have any effect. --- We haven't had a service agreement on our 3M gate for years. District electricians handle routine maintenance (which is all it seems to need). I'm not familiar with Michigan, but I'll bet you're close enough to a 3M maintenance center so a regular (pay for it outright) service call wouldn't be that expensive -- find out! --- I have had checkpoint Security for ten years, and never have had a service agreement. in all those years I have had one service call. Think about 3M before submitting to this extortionate service agreement cost. --- We have had our system for about 12 years, and have only needed service four times. We haven't had to have service in at least three years. --- Yes it is a lot, however, if you need a service call they charge from the time they leave home base until they return to home base. Call 3m and see where your tech would come from. Ours would come from NH or CT. The travel time is approx. 8 hours and that's before parts and labor are added. --- I have always kept up the 3M security maintenance agreement. Although over there past 12 years, I have only had to have technicians here 3-4 times, it is super expensive to replace parts and have the service tech come out. --- My personal feeling is not to pay for service contracts - it's like telling the companies it's ok to make poor quality products and I'll pay you just in case it breaks down... Thanks again to all who responded - I'm spending my money on books!
