We do not teach students to memorize Dewey numbers but rather to understand that the different numbers reflect different subject headings. They know that the 100s are on one shelf, the 700s are on another. We are teaching them to recognize the call number as a location guide and to recognize that books with similar call numbers will be placed in the same general area. We place number ranges on the ends of each shelf and again above the shelf itself to help kids figure out where the 599.74 (or whatever) is going to be. Our littlest ones call this finding the book's "neighborhood" and "address" and even kindergarten students have been locating books on a desired subject independently.
