Good morning, This announcement is being sent to a number of lists. Apologies for any duplicate postings. Registration is open for Introduction to Searching American Memory, a FREE online workshop sponsored by the Library of Congress. The workshop will be held from October 20 through November 10, 1999 at the Learning Page website at <http://learning.loc.gov/learn/>. The workshop is accessible at your convenience through your Internet connection and World Wide Web browser either at home or at school. Through the workshop you will discover the contents of the American Memory digitized historical collections <http://memory.loc.gov> while learning ways to find primary source materials to enhance your classroom instruction. You will learn how to choose effective search terms and streamline searches. This course is appropriate for educators who would like an introduction to searching the American Memory collections. Interactive activities will help you become familiar with searching techniques. Online discussions with other teachers and media specialists provide an opportunity to exchange ideas for using this site with students and talk with Library of Congress staff. What previous workshop participants have said about their experience: "It was a great way to introduce your site and help us to learn how to use it. I can't imagine teaching American history without it now! I especially love the old photographs and the connections that I found with my own state to be personally and professionally stimulating. Thanks for the opportunity!" "The discussions were great and I downloaded them for future reference – what a group!" "All this knowledge for free…WOW!" "I enjoyed the discussion postings almost as much as the actual data." "Thanks to all of you for the many new thoughts buzzing around in my head. I must have printed every lesson and discussion to have references for the future." If you are interested in this course, you will need e-mail and Web access for at least 6 hours a week from October 20 to November 10. All instruction will be online at the Library of Congress Learning Page World Wide Web site at <http://learning.loc.gov/learn/>. You can register for this free course by completing the on-line registration form at <memory.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpedu/webwork/form.htl>. The course is open to the first twenty-five participants who register.
