That monster story reminds me of a picture book by Natalie Babbit called The
Something.  It's about a geeky looking monster named Milo who is afraid of
what might come in the night.  He's got a general idea of what it might look
like, and one night it visits him - Eek!  it's a little girl!  Turns out
she's been afraid of something that looks like him.  It's so cute.  Probably
out of print, tho.
