Contact the Japanese-American Citizens League, National Education Committee. They have a curriculum and resource guide Entitled A Lesson in American History: The Japanese American Exeperience. Their address is: Japanese American Citizens League, 1765 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94115. This resource has one section which gives a 5 page list of audio-visual materials and where to get them. It also has one section on regional resources which might be extremely helpful. It is my understanding that the Japanese American Citizens League intends to produce a curriculum kit on Internment with mounted photographs, videos and other resources for use in the classroom (1998 workshop brochure info). It will be available for loan at no charge to teachers. This may have been accomplished by now. There are also films available through NAATA (National Asian American Telecommunications Association), 346 Ninth St. 2nd Flr, San Francisco, CA 94103. Several mentioned are Meeting at Tule Lake a 33 min. documentary in which 7 former internees of the Tule Lake Segregation Center discuss their past and how they came to terms with their identity, poitically and socially, during and after the camp experience; tanforan: Race Track to Assembly Center which is a 57 min. documentary that was the first in-depth study of an assembly center. Another is called The Color of Honor which is a 90 min documentary which gives a vivid collective portrait of the Japanese American experience during WWII, inculding evafcuation and internment, and features the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. There is a viceo produced by KUED called Topaz which is a documentary containing interviews with former internees, footage of the camp then and now. It is regularly $19.95, but there is a 25% teacher discount (801) 581-7777. Still another source is Dave Tatsuno's home movies of Topaz, which is approximately 60 minutes and is a video copy of movies taken with an 8 mm. camera smuggled into Topaz. It includes many scenes of everyday life in camp. This film footage was added to the Library of Congress Naitonal Archives Film Registry in 1996. The cost is $15 and is available through the Topaz Museum PO Pox 241, Delta UT 84624. Send request on school letterhead.
