Our school is a Pre-K through Fifth Grade school in a very poor county. Our "SPECTRA" program is for gifted and talented students. We don't have a GT teacher specifically. "After struggling with what to do and who will do what, our SIT Team (school improvement team) decided to have the media specialist be in charge of this program. She has a scheduled time and day for SPECTRA -- just like a regular class. She pulls the students by grade level on a weekly basis and all SPECTRA as one large class on a monthly basis. It really has worked well. She is able to give those students the extra challenge they need and the "regular" teachers can concentrate on their classrooms." I guess this is one of those last items on the job description. Lots of questions came to my mind when I read this. What kind of training has she had to do this? Is she certified in teaching gifted? Where did she have to cut services to fit in these extra classes? Do the teachers work with her? What do you think? -- Linda De Vore, Media Center Director Casa Grande Junior High School Casa Grande, AZ 85222 jhmcld@casagrande.com “Friends are God’s parachutes.” --------------E0C9FE27394921AAF0285BED Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
All of us have heard about that last line of any job description that goes something like: "And all other duties as assigned" I just found this at Classroom Flyer a newsletter I receive (and recommend BTW) from The Learning Company talking about programs
for the gifted (quotation marks are mine):
DOROTHY wrote in to share her ideas:
The school I work at in Cumberland, MD , John Humbird Elementary, also draws over 85% of our students from low income families. {We have 430 students with over 325 students receiving free/reduced lunches!} Every year seems to bring a SMALLER budget and an increase in our student body.
