Dear LM_NET Colleagues,

Surprise: The very next LM_NET Unlurking Day of 1999 will be on Thursday,
9-9-99. That is a change from the previously scheduled date: 9-16-99, in
honor of the mathematically interesting date. :-)

Unlurking Day is held especially for those who have _never_ (well, maybe
almost never) posted a message to LM_NET. It is a chance for lurkers to
dive into the great watering hole, and share their cup with the rest of
us.

Please use the subject: UNLURKING for all unlurking messages.

BTW-- One thing that happened during our August 16 Unlurking Day was that
we loosened up on our LM_NETiquette a bit, all in good fun. So, I would
like to offer a gentle reminder to please remember to use identification
(a signature file) when posting to the group.

LM_NET has a policy of required identification within all messages posted
to LM_NET. Please start the habit of including identification in all
messages posted to LM_NET. You should be sure to include your:

1. Name 2. Occupation/Job Title/Worksite 3. e-mail address
  Example:
    Jo Booksworth, Librarian
    Best Elementary, Bestville, CA
    JBOOKSWORTH@BEST.K12.CA.US

On LM_NET Unlurking Day, all LM_NET lurkers are encouraged to introduce
themselves, and share a few sentences about their work, experiences, hopes
and dreams, or whatever they feel is appropriate. Please use the Subject
line of your e-mail to identify the topic, even if it is simply:
Greetings!

For you "newbies" who may be unfamiliar with the term, to "lurk" is to be
a voluntary read-only member of a discussion group. It is *not* a negative
term, but a rather fun and playful description of those who are content to
remain on the sidelines, and simply read the messages that are posted.

Many thanks to the inspiration of pioneering LM_NET member, Mel Roseman
and his wife, Gladys, who enjoyed unlurking days on another education
oriented discussion group. Mel, who first suggested that we hold such an
event, is no longer active on LM_NET (after several years of retirement
from teaching), but he is fondly remembered by many of our old-timers, I
am sure. He was happy to learn that we have re-established this practice!

For those of you who are worried about excessive messages showing up in
your mailbox, we suggest setting your mail to "digest" for the day.
 - Simply send the following message to: listserv@listserv.syr.edu
With the command words: set lm_net digest

Here is a reminder of how to post to LM_NET. Simply send a message to this
address, the same as you would with any other e-mail message to someone:
   LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

We look forward to seeing you on LM_NET Unlurking Day!
