First suggest he [my principal] rent the video of "Desk Set." Tell him you will be glad to discuss the future role of LMS along with a discussion of this classic film.Perhaps at a future Faculy meeting. Dorothy E. Tissair Library Media Specialist Mark Twain School Hartford, CT ricflair@mail2.nai.net It is true you can get many things online, but are they free?? I am sure every reference book can go online. But, I can guarantee it will not be free!! Libraries will have to pay to access them. I envision libraries of the future purchasing reference books online. There will still be a need for the reference librarian to help the people find where the information is. And where are people going to access this information? Not everyone has a computer with which to access this information. There has to be a place for the computer deprived. And, the average person couldn't afford to pay for all the information they are going to need. Also, nothing replaces the sound of a book opening, and being able to curl up in bed with a good book. Something is lost when a person is curling up with a laptop. While there are people who read for pleasure, there will always be BOOKS and a need for a place to put them. There is technology for a Book that is actually a computer. One plugs it is, downloads the book that they want, and then the book is there --it even has "pages" that turn. Even with that, there needs to be a place to plug in the book. Publishers aren't giving these away! This conflict was beginning to worry folks even 40 years ago! Of course, I don't know the name of the movie...I tuned in by accident after the title had already been shown. If you wanted to watch the movie, the staff at your local move store might just know the title. It's not "deep" but it makes a point comically. (Of course, I'll watch anything with Hepburn and Tracy!) Basically, people can just not be replaced.
