freshman orientation

We, too, have freshman orientation.  This year it was quite a drawn out
affair since we have 23 freshman classes and we saw each class for two
consecutive days!  In an effort to make this as "painless" as possible, we
present a video, a discussion of the OPAC and quick worksheets that
familiarize the students with it.  On the second day there is a powerpoint
presentation reiterating the OPAC information and other software packages;
this day is finished with a scavenger hunt so the students become familiar
with the layout of the library.  Since there is paper work involved, the
students receive a little bit of credit from their English teachers.  Yes,
the video is time consuming to script and produce, but it ends up being lots
of fun.  The video for next year has become a project for our TV production
class.  I will script it, but they will film and edit it for me.  Last year
the theme was Mission Possible, this year it was Info Trek...good
recognizable audio and video clips. Even though we still have to present
more detailed instruction when research classes come in, we feel the
orientation is justified.  It can be intimidating to go into a new library,
particularly one that is so large.
