You might want to try The Beasties by William Sleator. It's a creepy little
sci-fi novel about a family that moves to a wooded area (the dad studies a
rare type of fungi) where they begin to notice that local people are missing
body parts - noses, ears, fingers, etc. The area is being heavily logged.
The boy and girl discover that the connection is a species unknown - The
Beasties. You'll have kids on the edge of their seats!
