I have a third grade student, Jasmin, who sends me e-mail. She is Muslim, from Bangladesh, and her parents are divorced (due to spouse abuse which the child does not know about). She lives with her mother and her mother's parents. Dad lives in NYC and she visits him regularly. Dad has announced that he is getting re-married to a woman from Bangladesh. It is an arranged marriage. Jasmin is beside herself with concerns about this. She is the only child and I think most of her worries about that her daddy is going to be busy with the step mom and she will be left out. I am a step mom and have tried to reassure her, but the guidance counselor came to talk to me today. Jasmin told her that she writes e-mail to me. My biggest concern is that my Christian, American ways are going to contradict her parent's Muslim Bangladesh ways... so I try very carefully to weigh everything I say to her. I was shocked when she told me her parents were divorced, and even more shocked when she said Dad was re-marrying. Jasmin loves to read and I would like to find a book for her about step families. This is probably way too many details for you. Sorry, but thanks for listening. Anyway - can anyone recommend a book??? Karen DeFrank, LMS Dorothy L.
