Gen: spaces after period

In the "old school" we were taught to put TWO spaces after periods.  Our new 
computer lab textbooks are teaching the students to put only space after periods.  
This distresses the computer teacher and makes for cluttered-looking text.  What do 
you think or know about this style change?
