The reason for the 2 spaces after the period in the old days of typewriters
was because all of the letters were the same size, or monospaced. There was
no difference in the amount of space that an 'm' took compared to an 'i'.
Now, with computers and proportional spacing, if you put 2 spaces after a
period, you get 'rivers' of white space running through your document.
Typesetters have always used 1 space as they have proportional type for
forever. (Look at any magazine or book ...they all have just 1 space.) It is
just the newbies in the computer world that have to readjust. I did it a
number of years ago and it wasn't too tough. We just need to teach kids from
the beginning of keyboarding that it is 1 space. Part of the problem are the
'old' business ed teachers who taught typing and now are teaching
keyboarding and also all of those secretaries who were taught on typewriters
and don't want to change.

Fortunately, most word processors allow you to do a find and replace for a
period followed by 2 spaces and replace it with 1 space.
