Wherever I go I try to find books and/or local items that can lend themselves to a story about that area. I have a bird bottle (we use it at home in Spring) from Williamsburg and a book with 2 stories about baby birds using the bottle. I have a book from Bermuda to go along with my toy steel drum. I have Maybelle the Cable Car by Burton to go along with the toy SF cable car. I have an elegant feather mask from New Orleans to go along with the Talking Eggs by San Souci. While in Spain recently I bought a small bullfight poster to read with The Story of Ferdinand. I also have a collection of American stories translated into French by Lionni, Margaret Wise Brown, et al. These were purchased at the Louvre bookstore. I read the stories in English and then in French and the kids love to listen nd compare the language. While in Spain, I purchased an easy Spanish picture dictionary as well as a Maisey book in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish but our school has a large ESL population and we always get Spanish speaking students. While in Barcelona I became fascinated by the architecture of Antoni Gaudi. I purchased books of his life and works. I am planning a cross curriculum project with the Art teacher. I'll teach about his life and works using the Internet, a PowerPoint presentation and of course books and photographs. The Art teacher will do a project with the students. We plan to use both at our annual Showcase in the Spring. Last year when I got caught in the earthquake in Istanbul, Turkey, I shared my experiences with the children. I made a PowerPoint presentation in which I taught about the cause of earthquakes and that earthquake in particular. I had books available for students to circulate and they were popular. One of the most popular items in the Media Center is the large world map where we located the parts of the world that we're reading about. In this and other ways I feel that I am bringing the world to my students. ************************************************************* Josephine G.
