In my recent college courses (1996 or so) I was told that the "2 spaces after the period rule" is no longer valid because type and print quality have become so much better in the last few decades. Because of the "sharp" printing of laser printers, etc., someone decided it wasn't necessary. Although, those of us who learned to type "in the olden days" do 2 spaces out of habit.
