I can understand why so many were bothered by Mr. Trelease's words about libraries. He is the type of speaker who makes broad, absolute statements in such a forceful way that you can't help having an emotional response. I would just like to comment that when Mr. Trelease visited my school last year, he amended his usual (negative) comments about libraries by saying that he was pleased to see how attractive and inviting our school library is. For some perspective, all we had really done was to pull books off the shelves to display them on the tops of the bookshelves and put up some posters on the walls. His point to us was simply that displaying only the spine of the book doesn't attract anyone to read it. He also said that he understands that libraries can't possibly put everything on display, but should try to make books look interesting as much as possible. I know his recent article says a lot about having food in the library, but I suspect that he would be excited to see any of the things that we do to make students feel welcome. I also bet that he would be happy to know that his article has sparked this discussion on lm_net. Just my $.02 !
