Hi Jan, This comment comes from a MLS Grad student who won't even be out there in the trenches until after graduation in December but . . . in my VERY humble opinion . . . you are doing the right thing. As long as those old books remain on the shelves, as long as the library looks "full," it will be difficult to convince anyone--PTA groups, other fundraising powers-that-be and even district folks that you really NEED a budget to purchase books to update the collection. If they actually see the nearly empty shelves, maybe they will be motivated into action on your behalf. Perhaps if the librarian who is having difficulty with this could think about it that way, he might join you and even look forward to the prospect of replacing all the old and insensitive material. Now, I know the experienced librarians will have far better advice but I just wanted you to know I think you are absolutely right.
