Many people asked me to pass along the information shared. Below are the many responses I received. Thank you to everyone who contributed information. It was really helpful. I'm excited about getting started, unfortunately I have to wait until August! Sherri Kilby Teacher/MLIS student Royal Oaks Elementary Kannapolis, NC 28083 Kilby@vnet.net See the following: http://www.usd259.com/curriculum/standards/standards-elem.html **************************************************************************** ***** Ideally, your school district should provide you with a curriculum. If not, be proactive and let them know that you need one. It is important that your administration see you as a teaching professional and that your program is academic in nature. Use Information Power in the creation of that curriculum. If your district already has a curriculum check it against Information Power. If the curriculum does not align, promote the idea that it needs to be updated. My book Information Skills Toolkit: Collaborative Integrated Instruction for the Middle Grades has 49 lessons that are aligned to the standards & indicators in Information Power, but it is geared towards middle schools. Deb Logan **************************************************************************** ***** I use the Oregon benchmarks for all of my lessons. The books that I read, the info/research lessons are all based on what the students will need to know on the tests. I have mapped out for each grade the specific info. I find that I don't even look at the Info Power book at all. By matching up to the Benchmarks, I find that I have already met most of the info Powers objectives. My teachers love the fact that I let them know what skill or topic that I taught that day. JaKay Greer **************************************************************************** ***** Alabama has a great document called "Literacy Partners" and in this document you will find "K-12 Information Objectives" which I think if very helpful. Here is the site for their PDF file: http://www.alsde.edu/26/librarians/literacypartners.pdf Diane Culbertson **************************************************************************** ***** I have my curriculum on my web page at http://www.waseca.k12.mn.us/sch/es/mediahome.htm Kathy Mentjes **************************************************************************** ***** Sherri, there are example of what a student who meets the information literacy standards does, looks like in the information power book. Also check of the MCREL site-- I think it is www.mcrel.org for ideas. Darlene Yasick **************************************************************************** ***** Things are not only different from state to state but from school to school. Luckily nobody has yet put into black and white what and when we should teach. I am on the other end of the scale--retiring next year and in my almost 30 years I have never done the same thing consistently twice. I've never been impressed with district or state "curriculums". The imporant thing is to first visit with teachers--collaboration is still the key. Once you have a handle on what kids need to know you fit what you can in when you can--that's a mouthful. I have a coworker at a school that is very invested in literature and that is what she does. I, personally am very vested in research skills and that is where I focus all my time. What I am saying I think, is that there is no one right way. Trial and error is the best teacher. Look at all those lists of skills and make up your own mind about what is important.
