Target: Picture book about purple monster

My son-in-law said that in the mid 70s when he was in kindergarten there
was a series of titles about a human shaped purple monster that was
friendly.  It didn't sound at all familiar to me.  Does anyone have a
clue?  He would like to find out the name so he can pursue ordering on
e-Bay.
