We need your help! Please read this and pass it on to other librarians, teachers, etc... that might be interested. Last school year many of you responded positively to the idea of having a high school level readers' choice award, similar to the Mark Twain and Show Me Awards. I still have your names and e-mails on a list that I made up at that time. I'm hoping to hear from you all again and to add even more names at this time. We have slowly been plugging away on this idea and I thought it was time that we let you know our progress and plans. In November, Terri Clark (MidContinent Public Library - Blue Springs), Nancee Dahms-Stinson (Consultant, Youth and Senior Services, Missouri State Library), Sally Hatton (Media Specialist - Willow Springs High School), Peggy Northcraft (Hannibal Free Public Library), Stuart Pollack (Rich Hill High School Media Specialist) and Gail Rickard (West Plains High School Media Specialist) met in Jefferson City at the State Library. We worked on a vision statement, goals, strategies, committee structure and responsibilities, and book criteria among other things. We decided that we would ask both MLA and MASL to cosponsor this award. I sent our information to the board of MASL and Brenda Steffens arranged for the Mark Twain (Leah Murray) and Show Me (Paula Giles)Chairpersons and the president of our region (Southwest Missouri - Jerri Stanley) to contact Gail and I. We met with them last Sunday and they had lots of good advice and warnings. Gail and I are now preparing to present a workshop at our regions' March 11th meeting in Reed Springs. We will present our ideas and open the topic up for discussion. We will also ask librarians in our region to commit to a trial run of a miniature version of this book award for the years 2000-2001. Librarians in our region that don't attend the meeting will be contacted by mail. The purpose of this trial run is to prove to MASL that there is interest and support for such an award. What I need from as many high school and public librarians that serve young adults as possible is, your name, library's address, phone numbers, e-mails, etc. to put on a list that I can give to MASL to show that we have support. Please e-mail me right away if you are willing to eventually purchase the books on the high school reading list for your library, and then encourage your teachers, students, patrons, etc. to read at least four of the books and then vote on their favorite. I also need to know if you'd be willing to serve on a planning committee or be a reader-selector sometime in the future. Please let me know your interests, doubts, questions, suggestions, etc... Also, what about a name for this award?
