Thanks for everyone's input. Name of programs that have been mentioned as
good are:

Finale
Encore
Overture by Calkwalk
Sibelius
Alias
Rhapsody

The site www.lentine.com sells music equipment but it also has a way to
search for articles on different types of equipment. I found this to be
very helpful.

Here are the actual replies:

There are several good programs available to help compose and print music
on the computer. One of the best is a program called "Finale" by Coda
Software. It can be quite involved, but it is the most complete. They
have a condensed version entitle "Finale Allegro" that is cheaper, but
still has many of the same features. Other music publishing programs are
"Overture" by Calkwalk and "Sibelius" by Sibelius. All of these programs
offer pretty much the same features. You can either enter notes with the
mouse or by a midi instrument (keyboard), and allow you to transpose and
move sections within the piece. A good source for purchasing software is
Lentene's Music Inc. and you can contact them by phone (1-800-822-6752) or
on the web (www.lentine.com).

Below is my suggetion for composing music on the computer.

I happen to know a little about this since my son is a digital arts-music
major who will be graduating from Stetson University in May. He composes on
and plays the computer (he actually plays the keyboard as an instrument). He
uses a Mac and a program called Alias to do this.
Stetson has a digital arts lab. My son has a web site where you can hear
this type of music; it's called electronic music or electronica. His site
is: http://www.stetson.edu~tholt.

A basic system will need;
1. A fairly high-end computer; If its a MAC- a G-3 level machine would be
needed. If its a PC a Pentium III or better machine. Don't try and set up
a system with something less capable...it might run but just barely and it
definitely won't be fun. Audio processing is very processor intensive.
2. A hardware interface. The interface has to be compatible with both your
computer and the software. Not all recording software is compatible with
any interface.
3. Digital recording software

You will need software to compose music. But you won't need high-end
computer equipment unless you want to do composing at a MIDI
keyboard or some such. I have seen music composition and arranging
being done on a 486/Windows PC with a sound card -- sort of clunky
sound, but it's available.

I have two things to tell you. Two music teacher friends of mine swear
by a program called "Rhapsody." They have it installed on the computers
in their music rooms. You must have "midi" capacity on your computer,
however. My musician nephew also uses that program.

I write songs too, so I bought a less expensive program. It is not good
at all. It is called "Music Write Plus." I would not recommend this at
all.

If you are looking for score writing software that works essentially
like a word processor, will play what you write on midi equipment,
and transpose for you. -- that is what I wanted and I use Encore. A
new company just purchased the rights to Encore but it is still
available.

There is program (I forget the name now) but it cost much more
than Encore and is not really needed unless you are a professional.

If the teacher is mainly interested in computer programs to
compose for, and control midi instruments, that is another direction
which I am not familiar with but it is another class of software.

You can check out our "Teaching Through Technology" Web site. We feature
teachers who are using technology in different ways. and one is a music
teacher who uses computers for composing. Click on "Browse by Subject" and
then click on "Music" and choose the project called "High Tech Music." YOur
music teacher can also contact the teacher involved.

Look at Finale and Encore. Both are software programs that let you input
notes onto a background of music staffs. If you have a keyboard you can play
on the keyboard and the music appears on the staff as well. You can specify
different instruments so you could have a score for a group. And you can
play it back so you can hear how it sounds. My husband is a musician, and
music teacher. He has used Encore but he likes Finale better.

My music dept.
requested the same but they knew what to buy. I am buying Finale software
and another software program. I am also purchasing a keyboard. Student
will be able to play the keyboard from music on the computer and compose
their own music. I went through a company in New York(?), Sam Ash Co.
I'll get back to you tomorrow for cost, phone number, etc.

Here is the information I promised:
